Feather Keratin
Keratin is the main component of feathers and mutations in the feather keratin (F-KER) gene can result in structural changes of feathers. A mutation in the pigeon F-KER gene (T to G) results in an amino acid substitution which is thought to disrupt the stability of the protein. A study demonstrated that racing pigeons with the T/T genotype showed significantly better racing performance in long distance races compared to those carrying G/G.
This study can be found here: Feather Keratin
This test determines which alleles are present and the possible outcomes are G/G, G/T and T/T.
Sample requirements: please provide one feather approximately 2 inches long (the same feather can be used for multiple tests).
Results are typically available within 3 weeks.
